Flow Monitoring for a Reverse Osmosis Plant in Peru

Project Overview

A reverse osmosis plant in Peru required reliable flow monitoring on its primary permeate pipelines.

The project needed to confirm that the instruments could operate under the conductivity conditions of RO product water while covering several pipeline sizes and flow ranges.

Application Challenges

The main requirements included:

  • Stable measurement of low-conductivity RO product water
  • Suitable flow ranges for different pipeline sizes
  • Continuous signal transmission to the PLC
  • Reliable outdoor operation
  • 4–20 mA and RS485 communication

Solution Provided

The project adopted three SUP-LDG electromagnetic flowmeters and one SUP-FMC400 electromagnetic flowmeter.

The recorded operating conditions included:

  • Medium: RO product water
  • Pipeline sizes: 1, 2, 2.5, and 6 inches (DN25, DN50, DN65, and DN150)
  • Pressure: Approximately 87 psi (0.6 MPa)
  • Flow ranges: Approximately 4–39, 15–154, 26–264, and 141–1,409 gpm
  • Communication: 4–20 mA and RS485
  • Installation environment: Outdoor

The selected flowmeters featured PTFE lining and IP65 protection. Supmea also provided installation guidance, expedited delivery, and door-to-door transportation.

Results and Benefits

According to the project records and customer feedback, the solution delivered:

  • Continuous and stable signals at a conductivity of 150 μS/cm
  • Data fluctuation of less than 0.5%
  • Measurement accuracy of ±0.5%
  • 100% successful PLC signal reception
  • Reliable operation across a conductivity range of 5–200 μS/cm
